Restoration or Reproduction of Byzantine or Roman Mosaics

Trained at the Mosaicists’ Cooperative in Ravenna, I offer restoration services and faithful reproductions of Greco-Roman and Byzantine-style mosaics.

Greco-Roman-Style Mosaic:

Greco-Roman-style mosaics are relatively widespread in public spaces and are generally made using natural stone.

Byzantine-Style Mosaic:

Byzantine mosaics, on the other hand, are made using a special type of glass paste known as smalti.

Often used to adorn religious monuments, Byzantine mosaics have the distinctive ability to create a very special lighting effect in spaces with limited natural light, such as churches and cathedrals.

Indeed, the tesserae are arranged irregularly to reflect light differently depending on their angle and exposure.

Byzantine-style mosaics are often used to decorate crypts, walls and high vaulted ceilings. They are designed to be viewed from a distance.

I created the mosaic shown hereafter with coloured and gold Venetian smalti tesserae.

The prestigious gold or silver smalti are made using sheets of gold or silver leaf. The metal is sandwiched between two layers of glass and fused together. They are available in a wide range of shades, each offering unique and distinctive nuances.

Their brilliance lends these works not only a sacred or prestigious character, but also a remarkable luminosity.

Creating a Mosaic Using Traditional Techniques

Do you have a design in mind?

Feel free to ask me about specific patterns or motifs. I have an extensive collection of designs inspired by the Greco-Roman and Byzantine periods.

Each mosaic design is created in collaboration with the client and tailored to their individual project and personal story.

The work is entirely handmade using traditional professional tools, including the marteline (mosaic hammer) and hardie (cutting blade). Professional adhesives are carefully selected to suit outdoor conditions, ensuring the longevity and durability of each mosaic.

Mosaics created in the Stuc & Mosaic workshop are made using durable, weather-resistant materials. Each piece is crafted with artistic skill and professional expertise.

Depending on your requirements, a suitable base or frame can also be made to complement your mosaic.
